Our Future Barnyard

On days when I’m discouraged about not yet having a farm, I like to go window shopping at the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.   I belive in ALBC’s mission, “ensuring the future of agriculture through genetic conservation and the promotion of endangered breeds of livestock and poultry,” and when we do have our farm, its barnyard will be full of heritage breeds.

Here’s my ALBC shopping list:

  • Nigerian Dwarf goats
  • Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs
  • Shetland and Black Welsh Mountain sheep
  • Jersey Giant and non-industrial Rhode Island Red chickens
  • Shetland or Pilgrim geese
  • Welsh Harlequin ducks
  • Narragansett turkeys
